Official Statement on Stray Cats Being Considered as ‘Invasive Aliens’ in Poland
Unpad Street Feeding Animal Friend has released the following statement…
Unpad Street Feeding has read a certain article citing a study that labeled stray cats (Felis catus) as ‘invasive alien’ species based on the damage they cause to birds and other wildlife in Poland.
As an initiative running inside an academic institution, we want to let our audiences know that the club respects and appreciates the study’s findings & conclusions.
As the study only addressed biodiversity issues in Poland, therefore the terms and its concept should not be thoughtlessly applied to other countries as each country has its own unique biodiversity. There is still an ongoing debate about whether stray cats are an invasive species or not in Indonesia.
Despite the conclusion, the study should not be used to justify any cruelty against stray cats. Unpad Street Feeding reiterates that cruelty against animals is strongly forbidden by Indonesian law and could lead to dire consequences.
Unpad Street Feeding acknowledges that the overpopulation of stray cats potentially causes a negative effect on the local environment and wildlife. We support, recommend & encourage TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) approach to control the domestic stray cats population.
